Stag head with three roses
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A graphite pencil drawing shows a stag's head in front view, with branching antlers reaching up and out from the top of the frame. Three roses sit beneath the head, each built from layered petals with soft shading and spiral centres. The drawing is in greyscale on a plain grey background, with detailed shading on the deer's face and ears.

Everyone at the crossing knew the stag would come down off the ridge when the frost first bit the bracken, and Mother Ysolde always said it was the roses that brought him, not the cold. She kept a pot of them on the sill of the toll hut, three bushes grown from cuttings a pedlar left in exchange for a night's lodging, and she swore they bloomed only when someone on the far side was about to lie.

One November a carter named Tobias Reeve came over the pass with a wagon of salt and a face like wet paper. He wanted to pay his toll in promises, and she let him, because she was curious. He talked of his brother's debts, of a bridge he had not really mended, of a girl in the valley he had not really asked. Every word he spoke, a petal fell from the nearest bush and turned brown before it touched the boards.
The stag stepped out of the mist then, antlers branching wider than the gate, and stood at the edge of the lamplight as if he were waiting to be paid. Tobias went white and reached for his whip. Ysolde only pointed at the roses. There were fewer of them now, and the spirals at their centres had gone tight as fists.
He told the truth in the end, all of it, in a voice that cracked on the bridge and the girl. The stag lowered his head and breathed on the last bloom, and it opened pale and whole. Ysolde let the carter through without a coin. In spring the bushes budded again, and she never once said whose lie had fed them.
