Stag head inside a triangle frame
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stag's head and antlers are drawn in black ink, turned slightly to the right and set inside an open triangular outline. The face and neck are shaded with dense stippled dots and fine strokes, while the antlers are drawn with crisp, sharp lines. The drawing sits on white paper beside a pen and an eraser, with the frame filling most of the composition.

The dance hall's ceiling seemed lower than Nell remembered, and the band had been playing the same waltz since eight. She stood by the cloakroom with her father's sketchbook under one arm, waiting for Ruari Gunn to finish his cigarette in the rain so she could show him the drawing.

He came in stamping water off his boots and took the book without looking at her. Page after page held stags, all built from dots, because her father's hand had gone unsteady the winter before and he had taught her to stipple instead of hatch. A shadow, he used to say, was only a crowd of small decisions. The last page showed a stag turned to the right, set inside an open triangle. "He drew the frame first," Nell said. "He always said a thing needs a door to look out of."
Ruari tapped the triangle with a fingernail. "The sign over the stage at the Corrie Hall. Your father painted that for the committee the year before the fire." She nodded. The committee had wanted the stag large and gold, but the money went on a new roof and the board was left to the damp, and nobody had the heart to take it down.
The band struck up the last reel, and the floor shook under a hundred pairs of boots. Ruari handed the sketchbook back and said he would repaint the board himself, one dot at a time, if she would hold the ladder. She held it. Above them the stag, half finished in her father's ink, looked out through its black triangle at a room full of dancers who had never once thought to look up.
