Geometric stag head sketch
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A sketched stag head faces forward with wide antlers, alert eyes and large ears. Loose, hatched linework gives the head its shape, while crisp thin lines form overlapping triangles behind it. The drawing is in black and grey on a cream paper background, with no body placement shown.

The theodolite had frosted over by eight, so I breathed on the lens and waited for the sun to clear the ridge above Hollin Farm. Mrs Ashby had hired me to settle where her wall ended and the Pearsons' began. The wall was no help, having fallen down in two places and been rebuilt in a third that nobody agreed on. Triangulation was the only honest answer. Three fixed points, three angles, and the ground tells you where it stands.

The stag was already standing on my second point. I had not seen him come up the slope. He was an old beast, grey at the muzzle, antlers spread wider than the gate, and he watched me with the flat patience of something that has outlived several surveyors. I sighted past him to the church tower and wrote down the angle. He did not move, which I took as permission.
By noon the sums had come out cleanly for once. The true boundary ran straight down the line of the old beech, not along the crooked wall, and the Pearsons would have to swallow it. I packed the tripod and found the stag gone, leaving only a line of prints in the rime, neat as ink on squared paper, leading up towards the woods.
Mrs Ashby met me at the gate with tea from a flask. I told her the wall was in the wrong place, and she said she had always thought so. Then she asked whether I had seen the deer. I said yes, and she nodded as if I had passed a test I had not known I was sitting.
