Geometric wolf head design
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A front-facing wolf head built from angular polygons and thin black linework, with ears, muzzle and brow divided into facets. Shading is applied as grey tonal fills within the facets, and the eyes are the only blue elements against the grey gradient background. The design is centred and fills most of the frame, with no skin or body visible.

The fiddler had only reached the second tune when the wolf came down the lane between the hay carts, and every head turned to see what the bride's mother would do about it. She did nothing at first. She had counted the cheeses that morning and knew the number, and she knew the wolf had been hungry since the spring thaw. Instead she set down her ladle and walked out to meet it in the road.

The wolf stopped at the gate. It was grey as slate and cut all over with lines, as though some careful man had drawn it with a rule and then filled each panel with a different shade of ash. Its eyes were the only colour in the village that day, blue as the glass in the church window and blue as the hour before snow. The bride's mother, who had buried two husbands and kept goats through three hard winters, did not look away from them.
"You have come for the wedding," she said. "Then you will sit where the guests sit, and you will eat what the guests eat, and you will not touch the lamb." The wolf lowered its head. Nobody agreed afterwards whether it had nodded, only that it went to the far end of the table under the apple tree and folded its long grey legs beneath it while the bride and groom cut the bread.
At dusk the bride's mother carried out a bowl of broth and set it on the flagstone by the wolf. When she came back inside, her new son-in-law asked why she had fed a wild thing at his wedding. She told him that every table needs one guest who has walked a long way and wants nothing but a place to sit. In the morning the bowl stood clean on the gatepost, and beside it lay a single grey hair, no longer than a finger, with the lane's dust still on it.
