A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came to the show with a lattice of white paint on her muzzle, the work of a painter who had gone off to the war and never come back. Her name was Vesper, and for eleven summers she had walked the same three steps around the centre pole while the crowds clapped for the tumblers and the horses.

Then the crowds thinned. Amos Greaves sold the elephant to a zoo in Leeds, then the grey mares, then the striped tent with its patched canvas. Each evening the benches stood emptier, and each evening Vesper stopped at the pole and looked at the bare wood as though she were counting the people who weren't there.

In the last town a girl called Ada came to the ring with ink on her fingers from her father's print shop. She asked why the wolf's eyes were ringed with those close, knotted patterns. Amos said the old keeper had cut them into her coat with a hot needle, so the wolves of the high fells would know her as kin and let her pass. Ada laughed, but she stayed to watch the wolf that night.

On the final evening the lamps guttered and failed in the rain, and when the ring went dark Vesper walked out through the canvas flap. In the morning there was only a line of prints in the mud leading towards the hills, and pinned to the centre pole was a sheet of Ada's printing paper, the same knotted pattern pressed into it in black ink.
