A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came down from the hill the week the orchard roses failed, and Mara Vell watched it from the kitchen window with a bread knife still in her hand. It stood at the gate the way a magistrate stands at a door, grey feathers of frost along its ruff, and it did not come in. It only looked at her with those pale, patient eyes until she understood it wanted the thing her grandmother had buried under the medlar tree.

Her grandmother had always said the wolf was a keeper and not a thief. Mara had never believed it. She went out barefoot into the wet grass, dug where the old woman had told her, and found a tin box no bigger than a hymnbook, its lid stamped with a rose gone black at the petals. Inside lay a folded deed to the valley, a cracked brass compass, and a single seed wrapped in waxed paper.

She carried the box to the gate. The wolf lowered its great head and breathed on the tin, and the frost on its feathers shivered and fell away like ash. Then it turned and climbed back up the hill without a sound. By morning the medlar had put out a crop of blossom so white it hurt to look at, and the seed in Mara's palm had split open to show a green root no thicker than a thread.
