Black and grey geometric wolf head tattoo with faceted linework and dotwork shading, running along the inner forearm.

Geometric wolf head on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A faceted wolf head is tattooed along the forearm, built from angular black outlines divided into triangular and polygonal planes. The shading uses fine stippled dots that grow denser toward the edges, giving the form depth, and the eyes and nose are picked out with small grey highlights. The design wraps diagonally across the arm against a plain pale grey background.

The lift in Harrow Court had been broken since March, so Dev carried the cardboard boxes up eleven flights and counted the landings out loud to keep his breath even. Mrs Okafor on the seventh floor had left her door open and a radio playing the shipping forecast, which she said helped her sleep. She was seventy-three and wanted her late husband's tools moved to the community shed before the council came round to clear the stairwell.

The tools were wrapped in old bath towels. Under them, in a biscuit tin, Dev found a folded sheet of tracing paper covered in pencil lines, a wolf's head broken into sharp triangles, each one numbered in careful capitals. The numbers ran from one to ninety-six. Beside the last one, someone had written WAIT FOR THE LIGHT in biro, and then crossed it out so hard the paper had torn.

He asked her about it on the landing. She looked at the drawing for a long time, then at the window, where the grey sky over the car park was slowly going orange at the edges. "He drew that for a boy who lived downstairs," she said. "The boy wanted it on his arm. Stone-faced, the way wolves look when they're deciding whether to run. My husband said the lines had to be cut before they could be shaded, otherwise nothing would hold."

Dev folded the tracing paper back into its square and held it out. She shook her head and pressed it into his palm instead. "Take it to the shed," she said. "Somebody in there still needs to finish the count."
