Geometric wolf head on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a wolf's head built from angular, faceted geometric lines, with the ears, brow and muzzle divided into triangles and fan shapes. The design uses solid outlines and fine hatched and dotted fill, with soft grey shading around the edges of the ears and face. It sits centred on a forearm against a plain background with green foliage.

Sit yourself down, the chairs by the door are the only ones that don't rock. Mind the step, the boards lift by the piano and they always have. Now, you want the wolf. Everyone in Harrowgate knew the wolf that came out of the cut behind the mills, and nobody could agree on its colour, only that it was made of angles, as if someone had folded it out of tin without once letting a corner go round.

It came to the back door of the Palais every Saturday during the war years, when the hall was lit by one bulb and a paraffin heater. Ada Kettering ran the cloakroom then, and she was the only one who would feed it. She'd leave the crusts from the buffet on the step, and the wolf would sit in the lamplight with its ears like two sharp triangles and its brow split into a fan of ribs, and when it looked at you, you saw your own face broken into shards and set back together wrong.

One night a bandleader called Lenny Vane got drunk enough to bet it. Ten shillings, he said, that the wolf couldn't keep three-four time. So the wolf came in off the step, and the band struck up a waltz, and it stepped in threes so exact that every stroke of the fiddle fell on a corner of it. Lenny lost the beat by the second bar and never found it again. The wolf took Ada by the hand, very gently, and they went round the floor until the boards sprang up and split along the lines of its face.

Ada swept the hall the next morning and found the dust had settled into the shape of the wolf, every line in its place. She never swept that part again, and nobody else would touch it. Ten shillings is still on the bar, under a beer mat, if you want to ask.
