Geometric wolf head on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head faces forward, built from angular facets, straight rays and triangles, with a small triangle above its brow and a dotted diamond and triangle motif extending below the muzzle. The linework is fine and precise, with stippled dotwork filling the cheeks, eyes and ears. The tattoo is entirely black ink in shades of grey on pale skin, centred on a forearm against a stone paved background.

You find the gap in the yew at first light, a clean triangle of air where the third panel of the topiary should be. Your grandmother laid out this garden by string and a brass compass, every bed a facet, every path a ray running out from the lily pond like the spokes of a cut stone. Nothing in it is meant to be curved. She said curves were for animals that did not plan.

Last winter the wolf came, or what the village called the wolf, a long grey thing that trotted down the drive with its eyes fixed on the pond. The postman swore it had stared at him through the gate. You kept the kitchen door bolted and told yourself the hedge would hold. Yet the clipped shapes keep giving way, one panel at a time, always along the lines your grandmother drew.

So on the seventh night you sit on the stone bench with a lamp and a pencil, and you do what she taught you. You measure. Every angle leads to the same point, a dotted diamond you had never noticed, pricked into the flagstones beneath the sundial in tiny stippled marks. You dig with the trowel until the ground gives up a small iron box, and inside it a folded map: the garden drawn as a wolf's head, eyes set in the two lily beds, muzzle at the pond, and below it a line of triangles pointing down the lawn toward the gate.

You understand then that she never built a garden to keep anything out. She built a face, and it was waiting for someone to finish it. At dawn you take the shears and cut the last triangle clean, and for the first time the hedge looks like something that is listening.
