Black fine-line geometric wolf head tattoo on the upper arm of a woman wearing a white vest top.

Geometric wolf head on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's upper arm shows a geometric wolf head drawn in black linework, built from angular facets for the ears, muzzle and eyes. The lines are thin and even, with small diamond shapes marking the eyes against the pale skin. The plain white top and soft neutral background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The surveyor's truck gave out forty miles short of Tesk Wells, so Maud Calloway walked the last stretch with her theodolite on one shoulder and a canvas bag of sandwiches on the other. The road was little more than two ruts and a rumour. By noon the heat had flattened the horizon into a grey blade, and the only landmarks were the ridges, angled and sharp as folded paper.

On the third ridge she found the marker. Someone had scratched a head into the rock with a nail: a wolf built from straight lines, ears like pointed flags, a muzzle cut into facets, two small diamonds for eyes. She knew the hand. Her brother Tom had drawn it on every map he ever handed her, the way other boys doodled hearts. He had gone up this road in the spring with a pack of water and a promise to be back before the first rain, and he had left no other sign.

She took a bearing from the diamond eyes, sighting along the lines the way he had taught her, and the angles lined up with a dry wash that opened between two ridges. Following it, she found his tripod lying in the sand, its legs still extended, and beneath a flat stone a notebook with a single page of sums and a sketch of the same wolf, turned to face east.

She sat with the notebook in her lap until the shadows stretched across the wash. Then she folded the page into her shirt pocket, shouldered the tripod, and walked east with the sun at her back, counting ridges under her breath until the first lights of Tesk Wells pricked the dusk.
