Geometric wolf head sketches on paper
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Two sketched designs show wolf heads, one with three wolves overlapping above a triangular geometric frame and one with two overlapping wolves set over angled lines. The linework is fine and sketchy, with shading built from hatching and pencil tone on the fur and faces. The drawings are black and grey on white paper, with a pen and eraser visible at the top right.

The wolves came down off the fell the winter the herring failed, three of them in a line like men walking home from the pub. Nan Hesketh said they were the old pack's ghosts, and Dougie Pratt said they were just hungry, and both of them were right by the time the snow reached the harbour wall.

The boats had been out for nine days with nothing in the nets but grey water and a sock. Pratt's lad had drawn the lines on the back of a feed sack, the way his father used to, a triangle of string-thin strokes pinned under a stone on the quay. Every skipper who looked at it saw a star. Nobody saw the animals hiding in the corners until the fourth night, when Hesketh held the chart up to the lamp and the shadows of the wolves fell across the harbour wall like a second set of hands.
They sailed on the tide that followed, following the angles the way you'd follow a dog. The lines ran north past the Scar, where the water turned the colour of old pewter, and the nets came up heavy as church bells. Pratt swore the middle wolf nodded to him over the stern. Hesketh only said that wolves had always known where the fish were, which was why nobody ever trusted them with a boat.
When they came in, the snow had stopped and the chart was gone from the stone. In its place someone had chalked three pointed ears on the wall, and beneath them, in a hand that wasn't Pratt's lad's, a single line: pay the wolves their share.
