Three geometric rose designs on paper
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Three separate sheets show rose designs drawn in black ink, each with a open bloom, shaded petals and leaves, enclosed in a diamond or hexagonal outline. The linework uses fine hatching and stippled dots for shading, with dotted circles and straight geometric lines framing each rose. The drawings are black and white, photographed from above with a metal compass and two black pens placed across the sheets.

Gene Okafor's rose came out wrong the first three times, so at half two I gave up on the petals and started on the frame instead. The compass had belonged to my father, who drew kitchen extensions for a living and never once let me touch it. I set the point on the spare sheet at the nurses' station, opened the arms to four centimetres, and drew the dotted circle the way he taught me, lightly, so the ink would not bleed through.

The ward kept its own noises at that hour. The monitor in bay three chirped every few seconds, the kettle clicked off in the kitchen, and Mrs Pryce counted her breaths aloud from her bed by the window, always reaching forty before she slept. A diamond around a rose is a sum that never quite balances. The petals want to spill past the edges and the straight lines refuse them, so you have to decide which one gives.
Mrs Pryce called me over around four. She had been awake, she said, listening to the pen scratch. She asked me to draw her one that fitted the box, because a rose that fits the box is still a rose, and a rose that breaks out of it is just a mess of leaves. I told her that was a fair point and went back to the stippling, one dot for each minute I had left before handover, the shadows darkening under the outer petals where the light would not reach.
At seven the day staff came in with their coats still zipped. I slid the finished sheet across the desk, the rose sitting neatly inside its diamond with the dotted circle beneath it. The compass lay open beside the pens. I left it there, arms apart, and went home.
