German Shepherd portrait tattoo beside its reference photo

Realism · Black and grey · Photo

The left panel shows a black and grey tattoo of a German Shepherd's head and upper neck, with upright ears, a dark muzzle, open mouth and detailed fur. Soft shading builds the form and texture of the coat, and the eyes carry fine highlights. The right panel is a greyscale photograph of a German Shepherd sitting indoors, used as a visual reference for the tattoo.

The ears went up before the gate did. Bramble had been lying under the hall's back window since half past six, chin on the flagstones, pretending not to listen for the car that would bring Gwen Holroyd up the lane from Settle. Now both ears stood like a pair of open envelopes and the old dog's tail started its slow sweep across the bin lid.

Gwen had taught Year Six at the village school for thirty-one years, and the reunion was meant for the children who had passed through her classroom, not for the dog who had trotted in beside her every morning and sat by the coat hooks through every spelling test. Nobody had invited him. Nobody had needed to. The hall smelled of urn tea and floor polish, and the trestle tables were crowded with grown men and women trying to find the children they had been in each other's faces.

It was Kieran Doyle who found her first. He had cried over long division in the cloakroom and hidden there for a whole dinner break, and now he was a man with a pressed shirt and a wedding ring, holding a brown envelope gone soft at the corners. Bramble rose stiffly, nosed his hand, and leaned his whole weight against Kieran's knees the way he always had for frightened boys.

Kieran unfolded the paper. It was a letter he had written at ten, meant to be opened when Miss Holroyd retired. Gwen read the first line to herself and then, because the hall had gone quiet around them, read it out loud. I am going to be a vet, it said, so Bramble never has to be sad. Bramble yawned, tongue curling, and looked up at her as if the whole thing had been his idea.
