Paw print with dog portraits on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A paw print tattoo where each toe pad and the main pad contains a detailed portrait of a dog's face, including eyes, nose and a collar on the main pad. The work uses fine shading and smooth gradients in black and grey, giving a photographic, realistic finish. The tattoo fills the frame on the inner upper arm, with a printed black and grey photo of a dog with a collar placed below it for reference.

Gather round, gather round, and mind the candy floss. You want the tale of Mabel's dog, the one who walked the Michaelmas fair on a frayed collar and never once paid for a ride.

Mabel Crouch kept the coconut shy at the end of the row, and her Labrador, Tuppence, slept under the trestle table with one ear always cocked towards the dodgems. Black as a coal sack she was, with a chain collar that rang when she trotted. Every evening at dusk she went out along the lanes, nose down, and came back with a child's mitten, or a cap, or once a boy's shoelace still tied.

The autumn the big wheel jammed, with forty folk stuck up in the sky, it was Tuppence who found the ladder the engineer had forgotten under the tarpaulin. She didn't bark. She just sat at the foot of it, looking up with those patient brown eyes until someone took notice. Mabel swore the dog had been counting them, one by one, the way you'd count your pennies.

They say that when the fair packed up for the last time, Tuppence walked the lanes once more and left the prints of her four good feet in the wet sawdust, the middle one the broadest. Nobody swept it up. The ground outside the gates still holds them, and if you stand there at dusk you can hear a collar ring.
