German Shepherd portrait on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic portrait of a German Shepherd's head in profile, with its ears raised and its mouth slightly open to show its teeth and tongue. The fur is built up with soft, layered grey shading and dark areas around the muzzle and ears, with tan-brown tones suggesting the coat. The dog fills the frame against a plain skin background, with the edge of the tattoo fading into the surrounding skin.

The dog is already on the towpath before you have the mooring line off the bollard. Sergeant, the lock-keeper at Hatton called him, though nobody has ever explained the rank. He is a German Shepherd gone grey at the muzzle, and he watches the black water the way he once watched the lorries on the A5, as if it owes him an explanation and he means to collect it.

October has tipped the cut into fog by four o'clock. The Ellen Rose is loaded with coal for the boatyard at Stoke, the stove is ticking, and the wheelhouse lamp throws a yellow square onto nothing. You can't see the lock gates. You can't see your own bow. Sergeant has gone off the path into the hedge, and you hear him whining low, then a sharp bark that comes back off the far bank like a second dog that doesn't want to be found.
You follow the sound with a windlass in one hand and a torch you don't need. Twice the ground softens under your boots. Twice he circles back, shoulders down, ears flat against the wet, and waits for you to catch up before he goes on. At the lock the top gate already stands open and the paddles are already drawn, though no one has walked up from the cottage.
Back aboard, the dog shakes himself over the coal, tongue lolling, and lies down across the threshold like a bolt. You rub his ears until the fog thins to a grey you can steer by. Whoever kept the gates that night was never seen again, but Sergeant knows the way better than the map does, and he has never once let you forget it.
