Realistic beagle portrait on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated beagle is shown in a realistic black and grey tattoo, with detailed fur shading, soft highlights on the face and paws, and a plain grey background. Script lettering in a flowing style sits below the dog on the same arm. The photograph is taken close up and straight on, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The beagle turned up at Hurst Lock the week the ice went off the cut, sitting bolt upright on the towpath as if the council had posted her there. Her collar was red leather with SAYA stamped into it, and nobody on the moored narrowboats would say whose she was. Mavis at the chandlery thought she had been put off a boat further up the Trent, because she would not come near the gangplanks and watched every hull that passed with the same patient face.

Ruth, who kept the lock, gave her the heel of a loaf and a tin of pilchards on the cottage step. The dog ate politely, never greedy, and then went back to her post by the gate. Ruth noticed she always faced the same way, upstream, where the water came round the bend under the willows. When the lock gates groaned open she did not look at the boats going down. She looked at the water.
The Dolly Mae had come through in October with a bargee called Tom Harrow at the tiller, a man who whistled through his teeth and paid his lockage in coppers. He had said he would be back by Christmas for the spring cargo. Ruth had not seen the boat again, and she had not told the dog anything, because there was no way to tell a dog a thing like that without making her ask.
In April, a horn sounded beyond the willows, two short notes and a long one. The beagle stood up so fast she knocked the tin over. For a moment she stayed on her feet, ears lifted, every line of her straining towards the bend. Then the boat came into sight, and it was only a stranger's green hull with washing on the rails. She turned round, sat down again with her paws squared on the stone, and went on watching the water.
