Traditional style tattoo of a smiling ghost beside an orange moon and two bats, with Forever Halloween lettering below, on the lower leg.

Ghost and moon with Forever Halloween lettering

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon ghost with a black outline, blue shading on its body and a wavy hem sits beside a solid orange moon with two small black bats. The words FOREVER HALLOWEEN run along the bottom in bold black script. The bold outlines and limited palette of blue, orange and black suggest a traditional approach, shown on the lower leg in a close, straight-on photo.

The sheet is your nan's best cotton and smells of the pantry, so when Dougie swears the ghost will never find you under it, you believe him. You cut two eyes and a mouth with the kitchen scissors, then cut the hem in waves, because every ghost in the comic you read has a wavy hem and nobody has ever drawn one with a straight edge. Dougie is already halfway up the spoil heap with a torch wrapped in red cellophane. Below you the terraces sit in rows like dominoes, and the winding wheel stands black against a moon the colour of marmalade.

Halloween in Ashgill is not really about sweets. It is about reaching the top of the tip before your da notices the sheet is gone from the line. The old men at the club say a boy went down the shaft the winter the moon was that orange, and that he walks the back lanes on the night of the year when the bats come out to chase him. Your mam says that is nonsense. Dougie says it is not nonsense if you can see the bats, and you can, two small black shapes wheeling over the slag, quick as thrown ash.

At the summit the wind gets into the sheet and lifts it clean off your shoulders, so you stand there in your own jumper feeling foolish. Then you lift it again and hold it out like a flag. The lights of the village come on one by one in the windows below. Far down the back row, another pale shape stands up from behind a dustbin and lifts its arms, and you wave, and it waves back, and for once Dougie has nothing at all to say.
