Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small fine line tattoo of a cartoon ghost with two solid black eyes and a wavy, draped hem. Cursive script reading 'ride or die' runs along the bottom edge of the ghost. The linework is thin and even, with the eyes filled in solid black, and the design is set centrally on smooth skin in a greyscale photograph.

Now mind, I'll tell it the way Mrs Pargeter told it to me, sat on the back step of the Gull and Anchor with her hands tucked in her apron. You'll want to sit down for the bit about the stairs.

The ghost in Number Nine was called Aggie Tredwell, and she'd been a lodger herself, back when the house took in herring girls and tinkers and anyone with a shilling. She lost her husband to the trawler Mercy in the March gale of 1887, and she never once left the building after that. Every night at ten she came down the back stairs in a sheet she'd pinched from the laundry, and she sat at the end of the third-floor landing, waiting for him to come up them.

Her one friend was a girl named Pearl Hosking, who came to the house as a maid at fourteen and stayed sixty years. Pearl was the only one who would sit with Aggie. They drank weak tea out of the same cracked cup, and when the wind came off the bay and rattled the sash, Pearl would say, "Right then, Aggie, we'll see it out together," and Aggie would bob her sheet at her like a nod.

When Pearl died in the winter of the big flood, the landlady swore the house went quiet for a week. Then one morning the top landing was swept clean and a single cockle shell sat on the windowsill, and the next lodger, a cheerful man from Leeds, found his door left unlocked every night of his stay. He said it was the most loyal bed he'd ever slept in. Count that as you like.
