Cat silhouette in Starry Night sky on thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A sitting cat silhouette forms the outline of the tattoo, filled with swirling blue and yellow brushwork inspired by the Starry Night painting, including a glowing pale yellow spiral. Small lettering sits at the base of the cat, though it is not fully legible. The bold outline and smooth colour blends sit on a close crop of a bare upper thigh against a pale patterned surface.

Dear Dilys,

You will not believe the state of the sky here. For three nights the wind has been pushing the cloud round over the harbour like someone stirring tea too hard, and last night the moon came up through it as a pale ring, so bright it looked spun out of sugar. Mrs Penhallow says it is only weather. She said the same about the fishing boats, and the Mary Jane has not come home since Tuesday.
Tobias has taken to sitting on the sill of my room in the mornings, back to me, looking out. He is black all over, so when the light comes up off the water he goes the colour of a hole cut in the world. I have started to think he is the only sensible one in the house. He does not pay for his bed and he never asks whether the tide is turning.
Yesterday I found Mr Penhallow in the back shed with a tin of blue paint and a brush worn to a point. He was doing the night sky on the inside of the coal-store door, great curls of it, and in the middle he had put a yellow circle that went round and round when you stared at it. He said his father had painted the same sky on the wall of the chapel in Newlyn before the war, and that nobody had ever asked him to stop.
I did not tell him that Tobias has sat in front of that door every evening since, watching the spiral as if it might open. I think it might. Write soon, and tell Mam the cat is fine.
Love, Wren
