Ghosts, pumpkin and bat in a heart frame
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A heart-shaped frame with a scalloped green and white lace-style border holds two cartoon ghosts, a cute pumpkin with a face in the foreground and a black bat silhouette against a purple night sky with small sparkles. The outlines are bold and dark, with smooth colour fills and soft shading on the ghosts and pumpkin. The composition is centred on the pumpkin, with the ghosts and bat arranged around it and the design wrapping along the limb.

The last pumpkin in the stores had gone soft at one end, so I carved it on the galley chopping board at half past eleven, with the ship rolling enough that the knife kept wanting to go where it pleased. Halloween at sea is mostly a matter of keeping the crew fed and not thinking about the date. Bosun Ali Okafor had handed me a tin of cloves and a look that said he expected a miracle.

I gave the pumpkin two wide eyes and a mouth that wobbled, because the knife had its own ideas. Then I set out the shortbread and the brown sugar for the morning watch. Somewhere past midnight the galley door creaked, and two shapes slid in under bedsheets, one a little taller than the other, both trying to walk quietly in size-twelve boots. Dafydd and young Pim, the pair who had swapped the coffee for cold tea on Tuesday.
I did not shout. I pointed the ladle at the porthole, where the black sea and the gantry lamps made a sort of night sky, and told the ghosts the pumpkin had seen everything and would be telling the captain at breakfast. The taller sheet sank to the deck. The smaller one lifted his hem and whispered that the pumpkin had winked at him. It had not. It was the swing of the lamp, throwing a bat-shaped shadow across the pots.
I left the pumpkin on the bench with a tealight inside it. In the morning the shortbread tin was empty except for one biscuit cut into the shape of a bat, and a note in Pim's round capitals: FOR THE PUMPKIN. Ali says the ghosts are on rota for the next galley clean. I think the pumpkin deserved better, but I let it keep the candle.
