Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the cartoon character Jack Skellington standing on a carved jack-o-lantern, with three black bats and a small orange moon above him. The linework is bold and black, with the skeleton's body filled in grey and white, and the pumpkin and moon in orange and yellow. Purple swirling smoke or sky fills the background and frames the figure against the skin.

Sit down, pet, the kettle's on and the corridor lights won't change until four. You want to know why nobody on this ward wears a costume at Halloween? Right. It was October, Ward Six, and a night porter called Dougie Marsh swore he'd seen a skeleton in a striped suit leaning on the lift doors by the linen store.

Dougie went looking with a flask and a torch. He found the stairwell to the roof, and up there, perched on the parapet above the car park, was a carved pumpkin with its grin lit from inside. The skeleton stood on top of it like a man on a plinth, one bony hand resting on his chest, and three bats wheeled over his head as if they'd been sent for. Above the bins hung a little orange moon, low and round, the colour of toffee.
Dougie asked him what he was doing up there. The skeleton said he'd taken a wrong turn out of October, and the door that should have brought him home had been bricked up when they built the new wing. Could Dougie help him find the old way back? Dougie said he'd try, and the skeleton smiled with every one of his stitched-on teeth and pointed at the moon.
That was the whole trick, the old man said. The moon had to be carried, not chased. Dougie took the pumpkin down the back stairs, past the lifts, and set it on the desk outside the children's ward, where a little light still burned every night of the year. Next morning the pumpkin was gone, the bats were gone, and on the desk lay a card in spidery black ink: 'Thank you for minding the light.'
