Jack-o'-lantern pumpkin with a bat
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A carved jack-o'-lantern pumpkin with a green stem and dark leaves sits at the centre, with a small black bat in flight above it and dark smoky shading behind. The pumpkin has bold black outlines, flat saturated orange fill and a glossy highlight on its face. Below and to the left, a green monster-like shape with white teeth fills the frame, and the photo is taken close up with a dark background.

Dear Marjorie, the pumpkin you asked about is still on the wall of the packing shed, and I've stopped pretending it's the boys from the village. Tom swears he carved it at four in the afternoon, which is the sort of time a sensible man carves nothing at all, and he hasn't been sober since August.

Then the bat. It came in through the open loft hatch the night we brought the last of the Crown Princes in, flapped round the hurricane lamp twice and settled on the crate marked ORCHARD SEVEN as though it had paid for the seat. Mr Pryce says it's the same one that roosted in the church tower last year. I told him bats don't travel that far for a free sleep. He told me to mind my business, which is what he says when he has no answer.
The green thing is the real trouble. Nobody will say who daubed it on the sacks of fertiliser, only that it has teeth and the teeth are wet. Last Thursday Dilys went to fetch the ladder and came back without her shoes, saying it had been grinning at the gate. When I walked down there with the torch the gate was shut, the grass was flattened, and there were white marks in the mud like someone had pressed a row of pearls into it.
I have decided to leave the pumpkin on the sill. It has the sort of face you don't want to turn your back on, and it hasn't gone soft a bit since Sunday, which is more than I can say for Tom. Come up on the bus Saturday if you can. Bring your good torch, and don't bother with the gate.
