The umbrella opened with a crack like a gunshot, and the woman lifted clean off the hill, skirts ballooning, bag swinging beneath her, sailing over the slate roofs towards the reservoir. Edie kept the torn ribbon that had come down on her washing line with a scatter of tin soldiers and one red glove. She still hung her sheets out on blustery days, and each time she glanced up, half hoping.
