Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small dragonfly with delicate outlined wings sits on the upper back, with its slender body angled and a long, thin tail curving down towards the shoulder blade. The linework is fine and clean, with light shading inside the wings and very little solid black. The photograph is in black and white, with a dark background that frames the subject centrally.

Marjorie Penhale had been told the dragonflies would be a disaster. The ceremony was at the reservoir, the marquee leaned east like a drunk, and her nephew Tom had lost the rings somewhere between the car park and the lychgate. She stood on the wet jetty in borrowed heels and watched the water for something that wouldn't sink.

Her grandmother had a saying about dragonflies: they only come where the water is clean enough to show the sky. Marjorie had never believed it. Still, when the first one landed on the rail beside her, its wings held flat like folded tissue, she kept very still. Its slender body tilted and a long thin tail curved down over the edge of the boards, as fine as a line drawn with a single hair.
Tom came running up the jetty with the rings clenched in his fist, pale as paper. "Found them in the boot," he said, half laughing, half sick. The dragonfly lifted off and hung above the water, then darted towards the marquee where the bride's sister was tying ribbons to chair backs. Nobody else noticed it. Marjorie decided that was blessing enough for one morning.
They walked back together, and by the time the vicar cleared his throat the wind had dropped and the reservoir lay like pewter. Marjorie kept her eyes on the reeds all through the vows. When she finally looked back at the lake, the dragonfly was gone, and the water still showed the sky.
