Girl on a swing over a starry planet

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A girl with long hair sits on a swing seen from behind, wearing a dark purple jumper, with her feet dangling. Above her a dense, glittering starry sky fills the upper shoulder, and below her a curved planet with blue oceans and ochre landmasses wraps around the arm. The shading is smooth and detailed with rich blues, purples and warm golds, and the composition leads the eye up the chains toward the stars.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Kemi had been on the swing since tea, the chains squealing every time she pushed off the tarmac, and by eight the whole of Hartley Court could hear it over the telly. I stood on our fourth-floor balcony with a mug going cold and shouted that she'd snap the rope. She shouted back that the rope was older than both of us and had never snapped once.

The orange lamps along the car park had bleached the sky to a grey lid, so I couldn't see a single star. Kemi swore they were there. She'd read a library book about the Milky Way and said that if you looked hard enough, the dark bits between the lamps were full of them, thick as sugar in a jar. "You just have to get higher," she said, and kicked her legs out until the swing groaned on its hook.

So I went down. The lift was broken again, so I took the stairs past the graffiti and the bike chained to the bins, and when I reached the swing beside hers I sat down and pushed. The estate tipped away under me. The blocks shrank to a row of lit teeth, the car park became a bay of yellow water, and the roofs beyond stretched out in brown and gold like land seen from a plane. "Told you," Kemi said. "It's a ball. We're just hanging off the side of it."

We swung until my arms ached and the streetlights blurred into a smear. Then a bulb in flat forty-one went dark, and Kemi clapped and said that was one star going out, probably somebody's grandad turning in early. I looked up for a long time after that, past the lamps, and the sky, which had been a lid all evening, looked like it had holes in it.
