Two cats watching a full moon on a thigh
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A circular scene shows two seated cats, seen from behind, on a bare branch with a large full moon above and layered grey mountains below. The sky is a deep teal to blue gradient with fine speckled shading, and the cats are shaded in orange and tan. The design is framed by thin twisting branches that follow the curve of the thigh.

The Dodgem cars had stopped ticking at ten, and by midnight the field behind the Wheel of Fortune was nothing but cold grass and the smell of spent diesel. Ruby Teale climbed the old ash at the edge of the showground with a tin of pilchards under one arm, though she knew before she reached the first fork that she would not be needed. Dodger and Pennant were already up there, seated side by side on the bare branch like customers who had paid for the best view.

They had come with the fair in March, two strays from a farm outside Boston, one ginger as a marmalade jar and one the colour of weak tea. Ruby had named them after the bumper cars and the bunting because it was the only way she could tell the lads on the generator apart from the cats. They had never once come when called. Tonight the moon hung over the Pennine shoulders, so full and white it looked painted onto the sky, and the teal above the hills was deeper than any lamp the fair had ever strung up.
Frank from the big top came shuffling across the wet grass with a torch and a face like a closed ledger. The convoy left for Skegness at six, he said, and the Wheel had to be down before the lorries. Ruby said nothing. She sat down on the cold root beside the cats and waited while the last bulb on the Waltzer went out with a small, tired pop.
None of them looked back at the dark fairground. Dodger flicked one ear. Pennant leaned his shoulder against the ginger fur beside him and kept his eyes on the moon. Ruby thought the fair would be gone by morning, its painted horses bolted into their crates, but the moon would stay exactly where it was, and so would the two of them, watching it from the branch.
