Glitter bee tattoo with sparkles and dotted trail

Neo-trad · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A striped bee with stippled, glitter-textured wings is shown in two photographs, one on the upper chest surrounded by four-pointed sparkles and dots, and one on the upper arm beside a sunflower and a dotted trail. The bee has bold black outlines, with yellow and black stripes, a pink and green head and speckled blue wings. Bright colour ink dominates, with black used for outlines, stripes and shading, and a red flower partly visible at the edge of the first photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bee had been late to the sunflower terraces three mornings running, and Hesper, the royal apiarist, had begun to suspect the creature of mischief. Every other bee in the Hollin Crown hives kept to the grey, careful work of pollen and wax. This one flew with its wings dusted in crushed mica from the Ferrow mines, so that it threw small coins of light across the palace walls as it passed.

Hesper followed it one dawn, past the orchard wall and down the gully where the river ran green under the willows. The bee paused at each fallen petal and drew a line of gold dots on the path behind it, a trail that glittered like spilt sugar. At the bottom of the gully stood a shepherd's girl named Ysolde, who had spent a week trying to catch the sparks in a jar. She already had three pink glass stars pinned to her apron, each one a little burst of light.

"It won't be caught," Hesper said. "It only wants to be seen going somewhere."

Ysolde unscrewed the lid anyway. The bee settled on her wrist, bright as a struck match, and the jar stayed empty. Hesper walked back up to the hives alone, and for the first time in twenty years she left the gate open on purpose, so the bee could come and go as it liked.
