Globe and sunflowers across a upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A globe sits at the centre of a botanical composition, framed by sunflowers at the upper right, hydrangea clusters at the lower left and green leaves. The globe is shaded with fine gridlines and soft browns, while the petals and leaves use layered tones of gold and muted green. The design wraps over the shoulder blade on the upper back, with the subject's hair visible at the top of the frame and no face shown.

The globe had sat on the hall table at Hollins Farm since the auction, and Marjorie Pell had dusted it every Thursday without once spinning it. Spinning it would mean admitting the thing was hers now, that the brown continents and faded blue seas belonged to a house she had signed for in March.

Her nephew Dev came up from Leicester with a van and a box of seed packets his grandmother had labelled in capitals, every K crossed like a tiny fence. "She wanted these planted out by the sunflowers," he said. They walked the back field together, where the sunflowers had come up shaggy and tall, their heads bowed over like men reading newspapers. Along the north wall the hydrangeas had turned blue, which meant the soil had soured. Her mother had always said hydrangeas took the colour of whatever you neglected.

They dug the bed by the old pump, working in lime from a bag that split across Dev's knees. He asked what she was going to do with the globe. She said she didn't know. At dusk she carried it out to the stone wall, set it among the flowers, and turned it slowly until her thumb found Lincolnshire, small and certain, while the sunflowers' shadows lay across the Atlantic.

In the morning there was dew on every petal, and she left the globe where it stood, turned towards the field, so that whatever grew here would have a map to go by.
