Black and grey realism tattoo on a forearm showing a globe, a compass and a rose over an old map background.

Globe, compass and rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm sleeve shows a large glass globe at the top, with a compass and a rose below it, set against faded map lines and text. The shading is detailed and smooth, with strong highlights on the globe and soft grey gradients across the petals and leaves. The image is taken straight on, with the arm filling most of the frame against a dark top and a wooden floor.

The glass globe on the chart-maker's bench had cracked the winter her brother went to sea, and nobody in Harrow Cove would look at it straight on. Mara kept it wrapped in a grey wool cloth and set her brass compass beside it each morning, the way her mother had, so the needle could find the painted rose in the margin of every sheet she copied. The rose had been drawn by her grandmother, who said a map was only honest if it had a flower in it somewhere.

The needle swung toward that rose whenever anyone asked the way home, and it had never once pointed at the harbour the villagers named. Mara did not argue with it. She copied the coastline of three counties in a steady hand, wrote the soundings in ink, and let the old lines fade where they wished. The fishermen said she had a gift. Her mother said a gift was a debt that hadn't come due yet.

One evening in late autumn a boy came in with salt crusted in his collar and asked for a harbour that appeared on no chart in the shop. He described a stone pier with three lamps and a bell that rang only in fog. Mara unwrapped the globe. Inside the crack, the sea was turning slowly, as if someone were stirring it from far off. She set the compass on the rose and let the needle settle. It pointed past the boy, past the door, out toward the water.

She drew the pier in pencil that night, three small lamps and a bell in the corner, and beside it a single rose no bigger than a fingernail. In the morning the globe was clear, and the boy's footprints were gone from the step, though the door had stayed bolted.
