Roses and pocket watch sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, featuring a large rose at the top, a pocket watch with Roman numerals at the centre, and a second rose lower down with leaves. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients on the petals and metallic highlights on the watch case. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the frame against a plain white top and pale background.

The watch had stopped at twenty past four, the minute Walter died, and for nine years nobody in the family had wanted to be the one to start it again. Nell took it to a repairer above a fishmonger on Hessle Road, where the man turned it under a lamp for a long time and said the mainspring was sound. It was only the hands that had been knocked out of true, bent against the glass by a fall nobody could remember.

On the morning of the wedding the vestry smelled of lilies and wet umbrellas. Nell found her nephew Tomasz there with his tie undone, reading his vows off a folded card as if they might change overnight. She put the watch in his palm. He opened the case, read the words engraved inside the lid, and looked up at her like a man who had been handed something heavier than he expected. 'I'm not wearing it,' he said. 'Nobody carries things like this into a registry office.' 'You're not wearing it,' Nell said. 'You're keeping time with it.'

He set the hands himself, rolling the crown with his thumb until the second hand jerked and began its small, steady walk. When the bride came up the aisle with white roses wired into a crescent, Tomasz didn't look at her straight away. He looked at the watch on the altar rail, ticking loud enough that the registrar glanced at the clock on the wall to check it.

In the photograph taken on the steps afterwards, the watch sits open in Tomasz's hand with a rose petal caught in the crease of his cuff. Nell kept a copy in her handbag, folded behind the card with his vows, and every time she opened it she checked the time against her own.
