Globe with mountains and a red flower

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A red-based globe on a red stand sits at the centre, with a green landmass, mountain peaks and trees visible on its surface. A red flower with dark leaves and a small arrow appear around the globe's edges. The linework is bold and dark, with flat solid fills and simple shading on the globe and stand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mags, Dad says the globe has to go to the charity shop on Saturday, because the stand has cracked and the council wants the flat cleared before the men come to look at the damp. I said I would write to you first, so you can say no. The red paint on the base is the only bright thing left in the place, so I have been polishing it with an old sock while the kettle goes.

It's the one from the shop on Derby Road, the one with the mountains painted in the middle of the Atlantic where nobody ever goes. You used to press your thumb on the Himalayas and say that was where you'd be by thirty. Thirty came and went and you were in Leeds, which Dad says isn't on the globe at all. I checked, and it is, just very small, tucked under a crease near the top.

Last night I couldn't sleep, so I spun it hard and watched the green land blur into the blue sea and back again, the trees going round like a fairground. I stopped it with my palm flat on Africa. The little arrow at the top has bent over the years and now points at the ceiling light, which seemed about right for a flat on the fourteenth floor with the lift out of order.

I've decided I'm keeping it. The stand can be glued, and I've got a tin of the same red somewhere under the sink. Come on Saturday and bring a bag for the tea towels. I'll show you the bit where you pressed your thumb. It's still there, a faint smudge on the paint, and it points nowhere in particular, which I'm starting to think was the whole idea.
