A dreamcatcher with a fine black web, teal beads and a pink-red accent hangs from a hoop, with three feathers shaded in brown and grey trailing below. A small flower, a leaf and a second tiny dreamcatcher medallion sit along the left side of the design. Black linework and grey shading are combined with teal and red colour, set on smooth skin along the side of the torso.

Dear Win, the gulls have been at the drying lines again, and Mr Pryce has docked my wages for the torn trawler net. I told him that was fair only if he mends the fence he promised me in March, and he said he would think about it, which in Pryce means never.

Your Danny came round on Tuesday with his chest bad and his nightmares worse. He keeps saying the sea is climbing the wall in the night. I had nothing to give him but what was in the workshop, so I took a hoop from the cooper's offcuts, laced it with the tarred twine we use for mending, and strung a web across it as tight as a crab pot. I knotted in four blue glass beads from Mother's button tin, and a red one for the pink of the dawn. Two gull feathers from the cliff path hang underneath, the grey one and the brown, with a little brass medallion off the old clock case.

He asked what it was for. I told him it catches the bad dreams in its middle and lets the good ones slip through the gaps, the same way the herring slip the net and the gulls take what they can. He hung it over his bed. By morning there was a dead fly caught in the centre, and he was furious about it, which I took as a sign it had worked.

Tell him the small wheel with the flower in it is for the sea wall, so it can keep its own watch. Tell him the fly was the worst of them. Love, Edie.
