Globe and red flowers on a lower leg
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A globe on a gold stand sits at the centre, with its landmasses in orange against a dark teal sea and a gold meridian arc. Two red five-petalled flowers with yellow centres and dark green leaves frame it on either side. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills are typical of the traditional style, and the design is shown on the curve of a lower leg against an indoor background.

The globe had been on the pawnbroker's counter in Hull since the autumn, its gold stand worn bright where a hundred thumbs had turned it. Edith Pruett dusted it every morning before she unlocked the door. The orange landmasses had faded at the edges, and the sea had gone the colour of old bottle glass wherever the sun reached it through the window.

Walt Garrow had pawned it to pay for a ticket home from the docks, promising he would be back by Christmas. He never came back for it. Edith kept it in the window beside a tin of barley sugar and set two red geraniums in a cracked saucer at its foot, because the bare gold looked like something waiting to be collected. Customers asked whether it was for sale. She said it was spoken for.
In March a postcard arrived with no name on it, only a stamp from a port she had never heard of and a single pressed petal taped to the back. The picture showed a harbour with white buildings climbing a hill. Edith read the postmark twice, then carried the card to the window and tucked it under the brass arc, where the light could reach it.
The next morning she turned the globe slowly until the orange shape of that faraway coast faced the street, and she left it there for anyone walking past to see.
