Crescent moon and clouds on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular design shows a crescent moon with a human-like face in profile, surrounded by stylised clouds and small four-pointed stars. Below the sky, fine horizontal lines suggest a landscape with a small upright figure and a path of light. The work uses dense hatching and cross-hatching in black ink with grey shading, and the circular composition sits neatly across the forearm.

By the third wet winter the moon owed Harrowmere a face, and you were the one sent up the long stair of the Tally Tower to collect it. Nobody else in the Exchequer would climb past the bell. You went with a ledger under one arm and a lamp that smelled of rendered tallow, and when you reached the parapet the crescent was already hanging low over the cloud banks, pale and thin as a paring, the kind of face that had been drawn too many times by men who never looked up.

'You owe us a face,' you said. The moon turned its profile towards you slowly, the way a man does when he has been asked the same question for centuries. Its beard of light had frayed at the edges. 'I lent it to the harvest fair,' it said, 'and the fair kept it.' Below, in the flat fields the king had measured into squares, a figure stood on the white path the moonlight laid across the wet ground, small and upright, looking at nothing you could see.
'Then walk it back to me,' the moon said, 'and the debt is settled.' So you went down the stair and out across the squares, following the path of light through furrows that had never once been walked by anyone with a pen behind their ear. The stars that had been counting you from the sky went quiet, one by one, as if they had finished their sums.
By dawn the ledger had a new line in your hand: one face, received, against the winter. The crescent had thinned to a clean white edge above the Tally Tower, the clouds had loosened their hold on the hills, and the path of light was gone from the fields. Only the figure remained, standing where you had left it, holding the ledger open at the page and waiting for the king's clerk to come and sign.
