Gold and black lotus, om and chakra flash sheet
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A sheet of temporary tattoo designs arranged on a white background, with gold, black and silver ink. It includes large and small lotus flowers, yin yang and om symbols, a row of chakra mandalas down the right side, a hamsa hand, a seated Ganesha, an infinity symbol with the word love, and the words ONE Love, breathe and Namaste. The linework is mostly solid fills with some outline work, and the dotted and striped borders add a decorative frame.

The sheet had been wedged under seat 14C of the 6:14 to Halden Road, folded twice, and Marjorie Tull spent a full minute on the form deciding whether a sheet of temporary tattoos counted as an item or as rubbish. Gold lotuses, black om signs, and a column of chakra mandalas down the right edge like tidy platform numbers. Someone had been carrying their whole calm about in a plastic wallet.

She had worked the Halden Road desk for nineteen years and knew the lost things in their order: umbrellas, phones, one prosthetic leg in 2011 that nobody ever claimed. Gloves came in pairs and left singly. Books were the saddest. This sheet had the look of something bought in a hurry at a kiosk, the kind of small impulse that gets a person through a bad week. The seated elephant was drawn in silver outline, patient and a little smug, as if he had seen every delay the line had ever produced.
At four o'clock the kettle clicked off. Marjorie peeled the Ganesha from its backing and pressed him onto the corner of the claim tag, where he sat beside the printed word Unclaimed. Over the tannoy the 16:40 gave its usual wheeze. She wrote the description in her careful capitals: one sheet, gold and black, slightly sticky. Then, after a moment, she added: one elephant, in good spirits.
