Metallic gold and black temporary tattoo sheet

Geometric · Mixed · Flash

A sheet of metallic gold and black temporary tattoo designs on a pale grey background. The motifs include a butterfly wing at the top, a central mandala, a V-shaped chain of triangles and dotted lines, stacked chevrons, and two mirrored paisley and floral clusters at the bottom. The linework is fine and detailed, with some areas filled in solid and others left open, and the foil effect gives the gold sections a glossy shine.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy Ferris had been tearing backing paper off gold transfers for twenty minutes before anyone at the reunion noticed. The sheet had come from a market stall in Leicester, the kind that sold scented candles and cheap sunglasses, and she had bought it because the foil reminded her of the Year Eleven art room, where Jenny Wray used to press metal onto her wrists with the back of a spoon and swear it was real.

Jenny arrived at half past eight with a bottle of prosecco under one arm and a bag of tangerines in the other, saying she had been stuck behind a lorry on the bypass for an hour. They sat at the end of a trestle table in the Cygnet Road Community Hall, under a banner that still said Welcome Back Class of 1998 with the date half peeled off. Jenny laughed at the sheet, then went quiet and held out her forearm without being asked.

Dorothy laid the paisley cluster on the inside of Jenny's wrist and rubbed it with a damp flannel from her bag. The clusters were mirror images, so when they pressed their arms together, the two gold swirls met and seemed to grow out of one another, all petals and dotted lines. Neither of them said anything about the mandala or the chevrons. They were too busy making the dotted line match up.

By Monday the gold had worn grey at the edges, and Dorothy stood in her bathroom scrubbing at the last flecks with a nail brush. Jenny's message was on her phone: a photo of her own wrist, the design half gone, and underneath it, just the word Again?
