Dear Marta, the sheet of gold transfers came through the scanner at Lane Four tucked between a bag of pistachios and a jar of your mother's honey, and I held it under the lamp longer than the rules allow. Every shape on it was pointing somewhere. The feathers leaned the same way, the swallow was mid-dive, and the arrows crossed at the bottom as if someone had meant them to strike each other. The man said he bought it for his daughter at a kiosk in Edirne. I wrote YS-59 on the form and said nothing about the foil.

Because the duty stamp was faded, I lifted one corner to check the backing. Silver underneath, gold on top. Your father always said you could tell honest metal from the cheap kind by how it rubbed off on a thumb. This came away on mine as a fine dust that caught the light the way the saltings did on the night you left, when the moon was low and the stars looked pressed onto the sky.
The man watched me the whole time. When I handed the sheet back he asked whether I wanted one. I told him I was on shift. He peeled off a single crescent moon with three small stars, rubbed it flat with a damp thumb, and pressed it into my palm, saying his daughter had enough of them. The queue behind him grew restless, and I slipped it into my breast pocket, where it still sits.
I am writing this on the back of a spare form because the car park is quiet and the barrier has stopped for the night. Come home when you can and bring the good bread knife. I know the moon in my pocket is only foil, but I find I keep touching it to see whether it has worn away.
