It lay across the white centre line just past the dead juniper, gold as a wedding ring, and it did not blow away when the wind came over the ridge. That should have told him something. He slipped it into his shirt pocket anyway, the way you pocket a coin you find in the dust.

Now lean in, because this is the part the old women tell with the lamp turned low. Every mile after, the feather grew heavier. By Caddow Wells he could feel the quill through the cloth like a splinter. By the salt flats the sky had started to hum a note that only dogs and his mother could hear, and his truck radio kept finding a woman singing in a language nobody had spoken since the railway came. She sang, "Bring me back what is mine," over and over, and he kept driving because the tank was full and the next town was a hundred miles off.

At first light he pulled over at the juniper, and the feather was no longer in his pocket. It sat on the bonnet of the truck, bright as a struck match, with a single bead of dew on its vane. He lifted it, and it was cold now, cold as any ordinary thing. He laid it back on the white line where he had found it, and stepped away with his hands open.

The wind took it east, toward the mountains where the gold is kept. Some nights, if you drive that road with the windows down, you will see a small light lift off the asphalt and go looking for the hand that dropped it.
