Outline heart tattoo near the shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is tattooed on the upper body near the shoulder and collarbone, shown in a close crop of a woman in a white tank top. The linework is thin and unshaded, in black ink, with the heart sitting on bare skin beside a layered gold necklace. The warm, soft-focus composition centres on the neckline and the tattoo, with the face not shown.

Dear Tom, the lupins came up blue this year, though not where I sowed them. The wind must have carried the seed over the wall into the bed by the coal shed, where nothing has been planted since Dad's time. I left them there. You always said I should dig out anything that wasn't where I'd put it, but I've decided I'm tired of being so tidy.

I found your old pencil box while I was clearing the potting shed on Sunday. Inside was the drawing you made the summer you were nine, a heart outline on the back of a seed catalogue, with a rose drawn inside it in your careful hand. Every line was a single stroke, with no shading, because you said shading was for people who were scared of the edges. I've pinned it above the kettle. Mrs Ashdown next door asked whose it was, and I said a boy who could draw a straight line with a ruler and no ruler at all.
The sweet peas you never liked are flowering now, all magenta and cream, climbing the trellis you built badly with three nails and a prayer. I've thought about pulling them out. Instead I've tied them up properly with garden twine, which I know would have made you laugh. If you come down at Easter, bring the drawing and we can decide together what to do with the coal shed bed. I've kept a space for you there, and I haven't dug it over.
Love, Mum
