Small chevron on upper back

Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman with short blonde hair, seen from behind with her hands raised to her head, stands on a sandy beach by the sea. A small chevron shape in fine lines sits on her upper back, between the shoulder blades, and appears in a yellow or gold tone against her skin. The plain sea and sky background keeps the focus on the small mark.

The tide had already turned when Mabel Kerrow pried the lid off the tin of gold paint, and the channel at Scarrow Sands was filling faster than the ferrymen liked. Her father had painted the posts for thirty years. Now his hands shook too badly to hold a brush straight, so she climbed the wet ladder with the tin hooked on her belt and the brush clenched between her teeth.

Every post along the bar needed a chevron pointing back toward the shore, a sharp V cut into the grey wood like the wing of a gull, so the pilots would know which gully was safe and which would take a hull down to the bone. Her father had shown her the angle with a bent nail and a fistful of sand. Keep the point toward the land, he'd said, and the sea will never argue with you.

She reached the last post as the light went. The paint was thin and ran in the cold, and her first stroke came out crooked, so she wiped it on her sleeve and tried again, slower, the way he had taught her, until the gold sat true and caught what was left of the sky.

On the morning ferry a boy she didn't know pointed at the marks and asked who had made them. The pilot said nobody, not really, and steered straight in between the posts. Mabel watched from the sea wall with cold paint drying on her knuckles, and found she had started to smile.
