Gold geometric armband tattoos on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman with long reddish hair, her face out of frame, shows her arm in warm low sunlight. The arm carries metallic gold and silver foil tattoo designs: stacked bands of lattice, chain links, triangles, leaf shapes and a flower motif. The patterns are crisp and symmetrical, set against a blurred background of wood and brick.

Mind the flour sacks, they're heavier than they look, and mind that step by the oven, for my knees have been telling me about it since the war. Sit by the warm wall. The dough has to rest another hour before the first batch goes in, and I was never any good at waiting, so you'll have to be my patience for a while.

My mother's bakery was on Cable Street when the bands of gold came into the trade, the flash-foil things that the shop girls bought from a stall in the market and pressed onto their wrists with a warm iron. Lattice, chain, triangles, the little leaf-shapes like the edge of a pastry crimp. Every girl on the street wanted the forearm stack, five bands climbing from the wrist to the elbow, and every girl's mother said it would wash off in a week and never did. My mother said nothing. She simply went to the stall herself, bought the whole sheet of chain and triangles, and asked the man where he had got the pattern. He said it came from a grandmother in Antwerp who had never been paid for it.
So she went to Antwerp. She came back with a grey suitcase, a cold cough, and a copy of the lattice cut into card, which she pinned above the proving drawer. Before the sun was up she would stand in front of it with her sleeve rolled and trace the bands on her own arm with a pencil, and I would hold the flour to her elbow so she could see them through the steam.
That is all, really. The triangles are on the rye loaves still, if you look. Here, the first tray is ready. Take the one with the leaf crimp; it is the only one that came out perfect this morning.
