Gold metallic geometric tattoos on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a person's upper arm, with long hair falling across the frame and a rose-coloured top at the bottom edge. The arm carries gold metallic designs: two leaves and a flower at the top, then bands of quatrefoil lattice, chain links, interlocking triangles, a small chain with a clover, and rows of leaf and diamond shapes. The warm sunlight gives the gold a bright, reflective finish, and the designs run down the arm in stacked horizontal bands.

On the island of Scarra, where the ferry came only when the wind allowed, there lived a gold-beater called Ailsa Dun. She hammered coins from the wrecks the tide brought in and thinned them on a flat stone until the light came through. The fishermen said she could make a chain from nothing but a breath and a sunbeam.

One autumn a stranger stepped off the ferry carrying a box of old brass moulds: quatrefoils, chain links, triangles stacked like hills. He asked her to press them in gold leaf onto the upper arms of every girl leaving for the mainland, so they would remember the island's pattern when they forgot its name. Ailsa agreed for a loaf of barley bread and a jar of honey. She worked through the cold months, laying leaf in bands: a small clover for the chapel window, leaves for the rowan at the harbour wall, diamonds for the nets.
By spring the girls had gone and the gold had begun to lift. Ailsa walked down to the shore to see why. The tide had combed the sand into the same patterns, lattice and triangles and little chains, and every ridge held a bright flake she had dropped without noticing.
She gathered the flakes into a tin and kept it on the windowsill. The sea, she decided, had copied the pattern better than she ever had, so she left its work alone and went back to her forge, hammering only coins that had already been lost.
