The band at the Pavilion was still tuning when Dolores came in through the side door, sand on her heels and a look that told you Frankie Vane had been waiting by the pier rail all evening. The silver arrows had gone on first, up the inside of your wrist, then the black band of triangles with its row of white dots, which the stallholder swore would keep off bad luck. The Eye of Horus was last, gold and a little lopsided, catching the lamplight from the hall doorway. He had said it would last a week, which was a lie, because by the time the band struck up the first slow number the seawater had already started lifting the edges.
Dolores pulled you onto the floor anyway. Frankie watched from the rail with his hands in his pockets while the two of you turned under the paper streamers. Somewhere in the second waltz the sea air got under the arrows and they flaked gold onto her frock. She laughed, brushed at it, and said you looked like you had been shot through with luck.
When the hall emptied at eleven you walked the tide line home with your shoes in your hand. The triangles had blurred to grey smudges by the lifeboat house. At the water's edge you rubbed the last gold eye off with your thumb and let the sea take it, and the chain at your ankle was the only thing you were still wearing.
