Dear Ruth, the tide turned before the gulls woke, so I walked the causeway alone with the lamp hooded against my coat. Mr Abernethy's boat was not at the slip. There was only the marker pole, its tip painted in the red and white bands he insisted on, and the water sliding over the stones in those short zigzag runs you used to draw in the margins of your sums.

I have been keeping the count the way you showed me, one stroke for each night the light went out without a reason. Eleven strokes now, pressed into the back of the logbook with the wrong pen. The paper has gone soft where I keep returning to it. Nobody at the station believes the lamp failed on its own. The lens was clean, the oil was full, and yet the beam would not turn past the Skerry.

Last night I finally climbed the spiral to the gallery with the blackout cloth and sat in the dark for an hour, the solid kind of dark that makes the glass feel cold as a held breath. When the first boat sounded its horn out past the rocks, I understood the strokes were not failures at all. They were the nights he had ridden out with the light off, so the smugglers could find the channel and the revenue men could not. I will tell you the rest when you come back on the Thursday packet.

Burn this letter, or better, keep it. The ink is nearly gone anyway.
