A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gold leaf came off the fanlight in flakes the size of sixpences, and you were the only one on Marrow Terrace patient enough to pick them up. Mrs Oddie wanted the Bellweather Guest House fit for the summer season, and she had sent for you because you had worked the hand-tooling on the ballroom doors at the Pavilion in Saltmere the year before. You climbed the ladder at seven, before the gulls were properly awake.

The fanlight was a half-circle of radiating bars with a stepped diamond sunk at its centre, like a seal pressed into wax. Above it someone had once run a column of brass studs up to the gutter and back down, dots and diamonds that counted off the height of the house. You had always taken them for decoration. Standing on the top rung with a fine brush and a pot of gilding size, you noticed the spacing was wrong on the south side. One stud was missing, and a faint line had been scratched into the plaster where it should have sat.

Mrs Oddie came out in her apron with her tea going cold in its cup. 'My husband measured it,' she said. 'He always said the house had to be balanced or the sea would take it.' You didn't answer. You pressed gold onto the first wing and watched it catch the light off the water, the rays fanning toward the pier like a bird spreading to land. By noon the left side shone and the right was still bare, and she had gone quiet.

That evening you fetched the spare stud from the cellar, set it into the plaster with a dab of putty, and stood back. The house looked whole for the first time since you had arrived. When the lodgers came down to the step the next morning, the sun struck the diamond and threw it across the hall, and nobody mentioned it, which you have come to think is the best review a gilder can hope for.
