Symmetrical geometric diamond design

Geometric · Colour · Flash

A symmetrical line drawing of a diamond-shaped ornament with nested outlines, a central rosette containing an eye, and vertical beaded lines running above and below. The linework is fine and even, drawn in pale cream on a distressed teal and brown background. The composition is centred and vertically balanced, with the motif filling most of the frame.

The tent had been mended so many times that I could no longer tell which canvas was original, only which patches my mother had sewn and which I had. Every winter we laid it out on the frost-stiff field behind the cattle sheds, and I went along the seams with a needle and a tin of wax, and every winter there were fewer of us to hold the corners down.

The diamond was the first thing Mr Arkwright painted on the centre pole, before the lions, before the name of the show, which by then had already faded to a rumour in Carlisle. He said a diamond held a thing steady because every line pulled against another. The eye in the rosette was his own idea. Watch the eye, he'd tell the boys on the trapeze, and the net will come to you. Nobody ever asked him what the eye was watching.

We sold the lions in March. The elephant went to a farm near Penrith, and the girl who did the knife act married a baker and never looked back at the big top. In April the last of the poles came down, and I stood with my mother's rope in my hands, counting the knots the way she used to, one for each town we had lost.

On the final night I saw the eye catch the lantern, cream against the dark canvas, and understood it had never been watching the crowd. It had been watching the road, the way it watched everything, waiting for the last of us to fold the tent and go.
