Gold lip print temporary tattoo

Chest · Colour · Photo

The image is a three-panel product layout. A large gold metallic kiss mark with textured, foil-like shading and small white streaks sits on a plain white background. Smaller panels show the same design on a woman's upper chest, cropped below the face, and on two sheets laid on green grass.

The gold leaf came in a flat tin from a gilder's shop in Birmingham, and Mrs Ada Pell paid for it with the last of the housekeeping. She did not want to wear it. She wanted to send something across the water that would arrive looking like money, because the sorting office at Dover opened every envelope from the coast, and nobody opened a sovereign.

She pressed her mouth to a sheet of tissue paper, first with a little rouge, and lifted the print off with a fingernail. She laid it face down on paper she had brushed with size, and the lips came out in pieces where the gold would not take to the thin lines, so every gap showed the white of the page like a crack of light through a shutter. She rubbed each shape down with the flat of a spoon and blew off the loose flakes.

The letter inside was four lines long. Walter, the stamp is over the mark, don't scrape it. Mother says the wheat's come in early and the vicar has taken the bell rope. Keep yourself dry. She signed it A, the way she had signed everything since the wedding, and sealed the flap with her thumb so the gold would not crack.

Walter's answer came in October from a port she could not spell, folded around a pressed fern and a single gold print the size of a thumbnail, smudged where his own thumb had held it. Under it he had written only: it arrived. She kept that paper in the tin with the leaf, and when the lid would no longer shut she left it open on the windowsill, where the light could find what was left.
