Live the life you love infinity lettering

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Flash

The main image is a black ink design of the phrase live the life you love, written in mixed handwritten and capital lettering that forms an infinity loop. Two printed transfer sheets sit on grass, and a small version of the same design appears on a person's side, below a grey top. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the image is entirely black and white.

The winding hole at Ashcombe is the only place on the cut where a boat can turn in its own length, and you have been avoiding it since April. Aunt Maud's narrowboat, Patience, sits low with a coal sack lashed to the roof and a tin of cream gloss balanced on the tiller. Maud is up a stepladder lettering the cabin side while you hold the pot steady, your hands sticky with the smell of turps.

'Live the life you love,' she says, not looking down. 'Which word first?' You tell her the loop is daft, because a loop only takes you back to where you started. She dabs the brush on her thumb to test the curl of the L. 'It starts with live,' she says, 'goes round through the life, and lands on love. You don't fall off the end. There isn't one.' You think of the desk in Leeds, the lanyard, the spreadsheet with your name at the bottom of every column, and you say nothing at all.

In the morning Maud sleeps late and you take Patience up the cut alone. The new paint catches the sun and throws the words across the water, reversed and wavering, so that every letter seems to be following you. At the winding hole you do not go on. You put the tiller over, the stern swings, the bow swings, and for a long slow minute the boat turns on its own length while the phrase circles the roof in the shimmering reflection.

At the lock Maud is waiting on the bank with a flask and two mugs, and beside her lies a plank she has painted with the same loop, the same curl. Underneath, in smaller letters, she has written: Turn when you're ready. You step off, tie the rope to the bollard and laugh until the lock-keeper comes out to see what the matter is.
