Infinity symbol with arrows and faith script
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Flash
The main image is a black line drawing of an infinity symbol with three small arrows along its upper loop and the word faith in cursive script across the lower crossing. Below, the design appears on two printed temporary tattoo sheets lying on grass and on a clenched fist showing a small version on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, in solid black on white backgrounds with no shading.

The cord had been looped round the bench nail so many times that the wax had worn a pale groove into the wood. Ruth Anning pulled it taut, checked the knot, and told her nephew to stop tapping his foot, because the shafts would not sit true if the workbench was shaking.

Three arrows lay on the cloth, each feathered by the same hand and cut to the same length as the last. Callum wanted to know why she made them in threes when the archery club only ordered by the dozen. She said a fletcher counted what she could carry in one go, and that a loop was the only shape that let you go round and come back without a seam. He thought she was dodging the question. She was, a little.
The lettering came last, in her own hand, on the long strip of vellum she kept for commissions. She wrote the word slowly, the way her mother had taught her to write a name on a christening gift, letting the tail of each stroke run back under the next. Faith went across the crossing, where the two arms of the loop met and the shafts pointed away in opposite directions.
On the last afternoon before the post went, Callum asked which of the three arrows would hit the mark. Ruth ran her thumb along the fletchings and said none of them, because the mark was never in the arrow. It was in the length of string between one turn and the next, and that was something you only learned by drawing it again and again until your hand stopped shaking.
