The snow had closed the pass for nine days when the carrier came down to the inn at Hollin Gap with a box under his arm and no coat. Mary Ashdown, who kept the kitchen fire, took him in because the alternative was the lane, and the lane was white to the hedgerows.

He opened the box on the scrubbed table. Inside, wrapped in tissue, were sheets of gilt transfers: a triangle split into six, a row of chevrons like a flight of geese, a feather, and a band of Roman numerals he said were for the clock tower at Stanbury, which had stopped at twelve the winter his master died. Each one would last a week on skin and then rub away, he said, and the gold would never tarnish. Nobody at the inn had ever owned gold that could be taken off again.

The landlord's wife bought the feather for her son, who was leaving for the coast in spring. He pressed it to his sleeve and wore it for four days. On the fifth, the thaw came, the carrier was gone with his box, and the boy said the feather had lifted off in the night and gone up the pass. Nobody argued with him. Later they found one chevron left on the inside of the kitchen door, flat as a leaf in a book.

Every winter after that, when the snow sealed the road, someone at Hollin Gap found a small gold mark on a doorframe in the morning and set a cup of warm milk beside it on the step, in case whoever had walked out of the white had come back the same way.
